Objectives

Founded in 1980, Inter Aide is a French non-governmental organization that specializes in the implementation of development programmes.

Our goal is to support the most underpriviledged families in developing countries by helping them build the capacities to meet their basic needs.

Malawi

Our guiding principles are to:

  • focus exclusively on the design, implementation and assessment of development programmes
always seek to work with the most disadvantaged families
  • take every possible action to build the capacities of the beneficiary families, by insisting on their full involvement and by training them to replicate the activities
  • act with political neutrality and absolute confidentiality, in full respect of the families' beliefs
  • keep a pragmatic, non-ideological approach when defining solutions with underpriviledged families
  • adopt a practical and professional approach: needs are assessed carefully with the populations involved, and programmes are designed and implemented by highly qualified professionals
  • whenever possible, priority is given to productive activities and access to employment; indeed, social activities are necessary but cannot alone lead families toward self-reliance.

Action areas

Inter Aide currently implements some 60 programmes in 8 countries:

Programmes

There are several types of programmes, defined according to the families' needs:

- IN RURAL AREAS

  • water and sanitation
  • agriculture
  • community health care and nutrition, school health and sanitation, tuberculosis and malaria control and AIDS prevention
  • primary education

- IN URBAN AREAS

  • access to employment: vocational training, microcredit and micro-insurance
  • education: early childhood developement and education, prevention of school failure in primary school
  • social: individual follow-up of the most underprivileged families
  • health : tuberculosis treatment and prevention

In certain areas, several programs are implemented simultaneously in an integrated way (for example, health + agriculture + water supply).

All Inter Aide's development programmes are implemented in partnership with local organizations (NGOs, community based organizations or beneficiaries' committees). Some programmes have been completely taken over by partner NGOs now continuing the activities by themselves (social programme in Cebu, implemented by the Filipino NGO Bidlisiw; integrated rural programmes in Haiti carried out by Concert-Action; water and sanitation with ARCOC and Bayaguana Servicio in the Dominican Republic). Some other programmes are currently being transferred (access to employment with CEFOR in Antananarivo, some projects in India...). Our aim is to strengthen our partners' capacities so that they can continue the activities, start new programmes and find adequate resources to do so.

Human resources

Inter Aide's internal structure is built to ensure the efficient implementation and monitoring of developpement programmes on the field.

The team is composed of :

- some 60 programme managers (among whom 40 are expatriates) based on the field are in charge of implementing the activities. The orientations of the projects are discussed at the field level, with a great autonomy of decision. All Program Managers are professionals (engineers, hydraulics specialists, agronomists, doctors, nurses, educators, managers) with a two-year minimum contract. They have chosen to practice their profession for the benefit of underprivileged families, in situations that are often difficult but certainly interesting and rewarding.

- 8 "Country Directors" set the strategies and coordinate a group of programmes. They are former programme managers and they spend at least a third of their time on the field. They provide the programmes managers with technical support, ensure monitoring and evaluation and continuity in the operating strategy and with the local and institutional partners.

- The headquarters team is composed of 14 persons (equivalent to 12 full-time jobs): 3 in charge of human resources and recruitment, 7 in charge of financial management, 1 accountant, 1 secretary, 1 director and 1 person in charge of the dissemination of experiences and practices.

Job opportunities (Inter Aide job offers are also available on Coordination Sud website).

Exchanges and dissemination of experiences and practices

Inter Aide, Essor and Initiative Développement (I.D.). have set up a network of exchanges named "Pratiques". It aims at improving the quality and impact of development programmes implemented by these member NGOs (Inter Aide, Essor , Initiative Développement, Entrepreneurs du Monde and Pro-Action Développement) and their partners in developing countries.

The experiences and practices are disseminated through:

  • technical notes
  • field visits
  • thematic worshops
  • a website http://www.interaide.org/pratiques allows dissemination for the benefit of larger circle of field operators (28 000 visits per month)

Budget : the budget for 2007 is 7 391 685 Euros

At least 88% of this budget is directed exclusively for field projects. We strictly limit our administrative expenses to no more than 12% of total funds we raised.

Each program costs range from 75,000 to 150,000 € per year. For example, a water supply project in an area with 20,000 inhabitants, providing water to 3,000 to 8,000 people a year, costs an average of 100,000 €.
